Eight South-West Victorian Schools linked to historical abuse investigations Arnold Thomas & Becker is investigating allegations of historical abuse connected with eight schools across south-west Victoria. The investigations involve allegations spanning several decades, from the 1960s through to more recent years. Former students have alleged that schools or responsible institutions failed to protect them, recognise warning signs or respond appropriately when concerns were raised. The eight schools linked to enquiries are: Warrnambool North Technical School Warrnambool West Primary School Hawkesdale Secondary College Terang Primary School Mercy Regional College Emmanuel College Monivae College Apollo Bay High School Arnold Thomas & Becker has commenced three court proceedings relating to schools in the region. Two writs have been issued in matters involving Emmanuel College, while another relates to the former South Warrnambool Primary School, which closed in 1994. Other investigations remain ongoing. The allegations have not been determined by a court. At that time, the firm was investigating allegations involving approximately 180 schools and acting for around 260 former students. Since then, hundreds more people have sought legal advice and shared their experiences. Many survivors do not feel ready or able to speak about what happened until years or even decades later. When one former student comes forward, it can also help identify similar allegations involving the same school, institution or alleged perpetrator. Some former students allege that complaints were dismissed, warning signs were overlooked or staff members were transferred between schools instead of being reported or removed from contact with children. An institution’s response can significantly compound the harm caused by abuse, particularly when a child who attempts to disclose what happened is ignored, disbelieved or made to feel responsible. Historical abuse claims can still be pursued There is no limitation period in Victoria for civil claims arising from physical or sexual abuse experienced as a child. This means a survivor may still have legal options even when: the alleged abuse happened decades ago the school has closed or changed its name records appear difficult to locate the alleged perpetrator has died the survivor previously received redress or another payment. Depending on the circumstances, options may include pursuing a civil compensation claim or applying through the National Redress Scheme.
