Our firm and what we stand for
Arnold Thomas & Becker is a specialist plaintiff personal injury law firm.
We represent people from all backgrounds in their quest to obtain justice and secure the most favourable sum of compensation in the circumstances of their case.
We have now been in existence for 50 years. We do not act for defendants, insurers or corporations under any circumstances. We are the fifth largest plaintiff personal injury law firm in Victoria. Our growth over the last 15 years has been very substantial.
We strive for excellence in the way we prosecute our clients’ compensation claims. We are not concerned about the size, reputation or resources of our opponents. We often accept and win cases which other law firms have declined. Many of our clients have been advised, erroneously, that their claims are not likely to succeed, often by larger law firms. In fact much of our growth over the years has been created by such cases.
We never resolve cases in order to prioritise our financial or any other interest we may have. We do not have a conflict between the interests of our clients and other parties, such as litigation funders or shareholders. We fund the vast majority of our clients’ claims and do not charge interest on the disbursements we incur. This scenario is unique. We treat our clients with respect. Our lawyers are approachable and ‘down to earth’. Our lawyers also have genuine concern and empathy for the plight of our client’s journey through the compensation system.
We also thrive to create and foster a collaborative, informal and inclusive work environment for all our staff where possible. All of our partners have a significant file load ensuring a relevant understanding of current litigation procedures and pressure. All of our partners are approachable.
Our work environment is free of prejudice or discrimination whether sexual, racial or disability based.
Established by founding partner Michael Arnold in the 1960s, our firm began its practice in personal injury and conveyancing law under the name of Arnold Morgado & Co. Under Mr. Arnold the firm developed a broad Union base. A prominent public figure, Mr. Arnold went on to serve as a Labor member of Victorian Parliament between 1982 and 1988 and was a Judge and Deputy President of the Accident Compensation Tribunal in Victoria between 1990 and 1992.
In 1978, Richard Thomas joined as a partner of the firm, which became Arnold Thomas & Co. In 1982 David Becker joined as the third partner, giving the firm its present name of Arnold Thomas & Becker. During the 1990s, the esteemed Dr Phillip Opas QC joined the firm, who had represented Ronald Ryan, the last man executed in Australia.
The firm currently has 5 partners, all of whom have worked exclusively in plaintiff personal injury law during their respective careers.
For almost 50 years, Arnold Thomas & Becker has been served by a dedicated group of expert lawyers committed to fighting for the rights of injured people.
Over the past three decades the firm has grown steadily and is now one of the largest personal injury law firms in Victoria.
Due to the firm’s ongoing expansion, in 2014 we relocated to Seabrook House, one of the most historically significant buildings in Melbourne’s legal precinct.
In 2015 we expanded and opened offices in Craigieburn and Werribee to service our clients.
