Questions raised over sexually abusive doc’s past

The number of women who have approached Arnold Thomas & Becker with allegations about a sexually abusive local doctor has continued to climb as questions are raised about his past.

Shafiul Milky, who was found guilty of sexual offences against six patients, was last month jailed for 14 years and six months.

Jodie Harris, principal lawyer at Arnold Thomas and Becker’s Geelong office, said that given the number of women who had come forward alleging sexual abuse by Milky in the Geelong region — 15 have approached our firm— while attending Peninsula Family Medical Practice and when using the National Home Doctor Service, there are “genuine concerns” that he may have preyed on more women at other places he worked at.

“We hope that following his conviction and sentencing, any women who may have been reluctant to come forward, now have the confidence to be heard and believed.

“We will respect the privacy of any woman coming forward and will be able to advise them on their prospects for financial compensation.”

Ms Harris said a woman did not need to initiate criminal charges in order to make a claim against Dr Milky.

“A civil claim can be run separately and provides an opportunity to claim for financial compensation which can assist (and) aid in the women’s recovery,” she said.

“We are currently investigating whether there have been any complaints in the Swan Hill area as it’s known he also practised there,” Ms Harris said.
