Security guard’s alarm over shopping centre attacks A shopping centre security guard who suffers permanent nerve damage after a gang of youths knocked him unconscious with a knuckle duster coward punch says no one is safe in public as mall violence explodes. The guard, who asked not to be named out of fear of follow-up attacks from his attackers, was this week awarded damages from security company Assetlink after teenage boys and a man in his 20s ambushed him in the food court at Highpoint shopping centre. The 51-year-old said he has watched the number of vicious assaults in popular shopping precincts skyrocket as he dealt with never-ending physical pain and trauma as a result of his 2017 attack. “If security guards aren’t safe, how can the public be safe?” he said. Tony Siskovski, the guard’s lawyer of Arnold Thomas and Becker, said: “His role was to keep the shopping centre safe from unruly and unlawful behaviour, but unfortunately he found himself the target of a vicious attack which has left him with lifelong injuries”. “We are pleased to have achieved this outcome for him as it will provide him with support for his future, and the result sends a strong message that violence against frontline workers will not be tolerated and employers must do more to ensure their safety.” Read more at The Herald Sun.
